Fort Nonsense is the third unit of Morristown National Historical Park, alongside Jockey Hollow and the Ford Mansion. Washington ordered the fort built in spring 1777 as an observation and alarm post on the hill above downtown Morristown. It was never attacked.

The “Nonsense” nickname dates to the 1790s and rests on a folk legend that the works were busywork to keep idle soldiers occupied. Historians dispute the story. The earthworks of the Upper Redoubt are still visible on the summit, with an interpretive model and panels next to a small parking lot.

The hilltop is a short walk or drive up Ann Street from the Morristown Green. The view east toward the New York skyline is clear on a good day and explains why the army wanted an observation post here. Free admission, daily during park hours.
