The Ford Mansion was built from 1772 to 1774 by ironmaster Jacob Ford Jr. After Ford’s death in 1777, his widow Theodosia hosted General and Mrs. Washington and their military family from December 1779 to June 1780. Eighteen of Washington’s staff lived in the house alongside the Ford family for that six-month stretch.

The site is the headquarters unit of Morristown National Historical Park and home to the park’s main visitor museum. The on-site museum houses Revolutionary War artifacts, period furnishings, and a research library; the mansion itself is accessible only by ranger-led tour (free, usually hourly during open hours).

Free admission. The address is the park’s main mailing address; if you’re navigating, this is the spot for the museum, the bookstore, and the Ford Mansion. For the encampment grounds where the troops actually wintered, drive about ten minutes southwest to Jockey Hollow.
