Founded in 1965, the Whippany Railway Museum is one of New Jersey’s oldest railway preservation groups, run entirely by volunteers. The static museum lives in the 1904 Whippany freight depot.

The collection includes a Southern Railway 2-8-0 steam locomotive (#385), cabooses, passenger coaches, a Pennsylvania Railroad scale house, and a crossing shanty.

Excursion trains run on themed weekends throughout the operating season:

  • A Father’s Day train;
  • Military Transport Day;
  • Pumpkin Patch trains in October;
  • Various holiday and seasonal trips.

The static museum is Sundays only, April through October. Excursion trains sell out; check the calendar before driving over. The site is behind the Exxon at Route 10 West and Whippany Road, about 15 minutes east of Morristown.
