Tourne County Park
545 acres of rocky hills, panoramic views, and a wildflower trail.
Tourne County Park covers 545 acres of glaciated terrain in Boonton Township and Mountain Lakes, about 15 minutes north of Morristown. The word “tourne” comes from a Dutch term for a small mountain. The summit at 897 feet has clear views of the New York City skyline on a good day, plus the Watchungs to the south and the Ramapo Mountains to the north.
What’s there:
- The summit trail, a short steep climb to the panoramic overlook;
- The Wildflower Trail, an interpreted loop with native species labeled along the route;
- A network of hiking trails covering most of the property, including a stretch of the Patriots’ Path;
- A small picnic area and parking near the main entrance.
The park has a notably rocky character — glacial erratics and exposed bedrock are everywhere — which makes it more interesting underfoot than most local woods.
Free parking off McCaffrey Lane. The summit trail is a 30-to-45 minute round trip; the full loop with the Wildflower Trail is closer to two hours.
