The Morristown Green
The 2.5-acre downtown commons that has anchored Morristown since 1715.
The Green has been the center of Morristown since 1715, when colonial settlers set the land aside as a public commons. In 1816 a board of trustees bought it outright from the Morristown Presbyterian Church, and the same trustee model still manages it today. Park Place, South Street, and Morris Street ring it; restaurants line all three sides.
Three sculptures stand on the lawn. Soldier at Rest (1871) is the Civil War memorial at the south end. The Alliance (2007) at the center shows Washington, Hamilton, and Lafayette commemorating the May 10, 1780 meeting that committed France to the Revolutionary cause. The Patriots’ Farewell Salute (2001) marks the Continental Army’s departure.
Programming runs year-round: summer concerts on the bandstand, the town Christmas tree lighting in early December, food trucks and the weekday lunch crowd in good weather. From the Green, every restaurant in the Dining guide is within four blocks.
