Mahlon Dickerson Reservation
Morris County's largest park, with the county's high point.
Mahlon Dickerson Reservation is the largest park in the Morris County system, over 3,500 acres in Jefferson Township. Named for an early New Jersey governor and U.S. senator. The land carries the region’s old iron-mining heritage in its rocky terrain and abandoned mine pits.
The reservation includes:
- The highest point in Morris County along the Pine Swamp trail, at roughly 1,395 feet;
- Headley Overlook at about 1,280 feet, with views of Lake Hopatcong;
- 27 miles of multi-use trails open to hiking, off-road cycling, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing;
- A seasonal campground (April through November) with RV sites with hookups, tent platforms, and Adirondack shelters.
About 30 minutes north of Morristown via I-287 and Route 80. Worth the drive for the longer trail network and the only car camping in the Morris County Park system.
