What SNAP Ruling Means For Food Aid Benefits In NJ

A federal judge has blocked bans on using SNAP benefits to buy candy and sugary drinks in 23 states, ruling that the restrictions violated the federal government’s own legal definition of “food.” New Jersey doesn’t currently have such a ban, though pending state bills would require the Department of Human Services to seek a federal waiver to prohibit soda purchases with benefits.
