Storm Threat Increases, Celebrations Canceled, Power Outages Linger Across NJ

A severe thunderstorm tore through New Jersey Friday evening with gusts up to 71 mph, leaving more than 150,000 customers without power and knocking out trees, powerlines, and NJ Transit service across the state. A second round of storms with gusts up to 60 to 80 mph was expected Saturday night, prompting several towns including Chatham Borough and Denville to cancel Fourth of July fireworks displays.
