How New Barcodes Could Help Limit The Next Cyclospora Outbreak

Grocery store barcodes are getting a meaningful upgrade: new 2D codes (think QR-code-style squares) can carry lot numbers, production dates, and expiration info that traditional UPCs simply cannot. The timing is notable given a current cyclospora outbreak tied to contaminated iceberg lettuce that has sickened nearly 11,000 people across 17 states, hospitalized about 400, and been linked to two deaths. Wider adoption of the new barcodes is expected by 2027, and the technology could help retailers flag recalled products right at the checkout scanner instead of relying on shoppers to decode plant codes on their own.
