FIFA Cannot Sell MetLife Stadium Turf, NJ Lawmaker Says

A Morris County assemblyman is demanding that Governor Sherrill seek a restraining order to stop FIFA from selling pieces of MetLife Stadium’s World Cup turf, arguing the grass was paid for by New Jersey taxpayers and planted on state-owned land, making any sale without state approval illegal. FIFA is currently selling turf pieces from $450 to $3,000 a pop, and Assemblyman Michael Inganamort estimates the organization could pocket upwards of $11 million from the sales. The Governor’s office signaled agreement that New Jersey taxpayers deserve a cut, though whether a restraining order is on the table remains unclear.
