Earthquake Shakes Morris County Saturday

A mild 1.1-magnitude earthquake rattled an area about four miles southwest of Chester around 3:50 p.m. Saturday, with no reports of damage or injuries. The recent uptick in New Jersey seismic activity has been tied to a previously unmapped fault in the NJ Highlands, now called the Mountainville Fault, identified after researchers studied the larger 4.8-magnitude quake that shook the region back in April 2024.
