E-Bike Explosion Damages Summit Porch, Prompts Battery Safety Warning

An e-bike exploded and caught fire on the front porch of a two-family home on Broad Street in Summit Monday night, causing minor porch damage before firefighters brought the blaze under control by 7 p.m. Two residents were evaluated for injuries but declined further medical attention, and Union County Hazmat responded to dispose of the bike and its battery. Summit’s fire chief used the incident to remind residents to charge lithium-ion devices with manufacturer-approved chargers and to dispose of old batteries properly at the Transfer Station recycling shelf.
