America’s Creepiest Roads Have Some Seriously Disturbing Backstories
New Jersey contributes two entries to Patch’s roundup of America’s creepiest named roads: Devil’s Lane in Toms River (neighborly proximity to Jersey Devil territory) and Warren County’s Shades of Death Road, which earned its name through a mix of alleged gang murders, malaria outbreaks, and a seriously gloomy tree canopy. The list also includes Haunted Lane in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, where residents in 1976 successfully fought to restore the ghost-story name after town officials tried to rebrand it as the deeply boring “Totem Road.”
