$5K Gift Card Scam In NJ Leads To Arrest 2 Years Later, Police Say

A Newton man was tricked into buying $5,000 worth of Home Depot gift cards back in April 2024 after a fake “fraud prevention specialist” convinced him his computer had been hacked. Two years later, suspect Lixi Wang of Flushing, New York was tracked down by Nassau County police and extradited to New Jersey, where he’s now awaiting court proceedings at the Morris County Correctional Facility. The old rule still applies: no legitimate agency or financial institution will ever ask you to pay in gift cards.
