On his way to Washington for his first inauguration, Abraham Lincoln stopped in New Jersey and delivered what many considered the two most powerful speeches of his entire inaugural journey, drawing on Washington’s crossing of the Delaware and the hardships at Trenton before carrying that same spirit into Philadelphia and Independence Hall. This free Zoom program from the Morristown and Morris Township Library picks up that thread and asks a question worth sitting with in 2026: how did Lincoln reach back to the revolutionary generation to make the case for preserving the Union?
