On a Sunday afternoon in September 2026, Macculloch Hall hosts author Louis L. Picone for a talk on his book “Ulysses’s Odyssey,” which traces Ulysses S. Grant’s three-year post-presidential trip around the world starting in 1877. Grant rode elephants in India, sailed the Nile, scaled Mount Vesuvius, and got a friendly heads-up about the mafia in Sicily, which is honestly a better retirement than most of us are planning. There’s also a local connection: Jacob William Miller, grandson of the Hall’s founding family, served aboard the ship that carried Grant through the Mediterranean. Books will be available after the talk. The program is free for MHHM members and Morristown and Morris Township Library cardholders, but registration is required and space is limited.
