Scavenger Hunt: Seedy Business

@ Frelinghuysen Arboretum

Everyone thinks that spring is the time for planting seeds but plants have it all figured out. Many plants drop seeds in the fall— giving seeds the chance to get used to the cold of winter, and gives both birds and mammals opportunity to cache seeds for winter. It’s also the perf…

Turns out spring gets all the credit while fall does the real seed-dropping work, and the Frelinghuysen Arboretum is leaning into that underappreciated fact. This photo scavenger hunt sends you out across the grounds to find seeds that plants, birds, and squirrels with better winter-prep instincts than most of us have already been eyeing. Complete the hunt and you’ll walk away with a prize, which is more than we can say for the squirrels. It runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 11, 2026, and Morris County Parks lists it as a family event, so bring the kids, your phone camera, and a tolerance for learning you’ve been wrong about fall your whole life.
