Remembering Picatinny Arsenal’s 1926 Explosion
Event to be held at Morris County Library, 30 E Hanover Ave, Whippany, NJ 07981. Morris County Historical Society and Morris County Heritage Commission are pleased to present a Revolutionary Lecture Series to celebrate the rich and vast history that makes Morris County so special…
On a hot July evening in 1926, lightning hit a WWI surplus explosives storehouse at Picatinny Arsenal and set off what’s considered one of the worst man-made explosions in American history. Morris County hasn’t been quite the same since. On July 15 at 6:00 p.m., the Morris County Historical Society and Heritage Commission are bringing in Jason Huggan and Jeff Ranu, both from Picatinny Arsenal, to walk through the events leading up to the blast, recently discovered footage of the aftermath, and the changes that followed. It’s free, but space is limited, so pre-registration is required. A Zoom option is available. Register at morriscountyhistory.org.
