Rutgers historian Louis Masur brings five photographs to the Morris Museum on November 17, and the case he makes is worth hearing: a single image can bend how an entire country sees itself. The lecture walks through Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother, Joe Rosenthal’s flag raising at Iwo Jima, Nick Ut’s Napalm Girl, Stanley Forman’s The Soiling of Old Glory, and Thomas Franklin’s Ground Zero flag photo. Masur is a Board of Governors Distinguished Professor at Rutgers with a shelf of books on Lincoln, the Civil War, and American culture, so expect the context, not just the images. Doors open at 9:15 AM, lecture at 10:00 AM. Member tickets go on sale July 13, general public July 20. Full ticketing details are at morrismuseum.org.
