New Jersey's Iron Highlands
<!--td {border: 1px solid #cccccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Hidden in the hills of Morris, Sussex, Passaic, and Warren Counties are hundreds of abandoned mines, shafts, tunnels, and flooded pits that supplied the iron for colonial tools, Revolutionary War cannonballs…
If you’ve ever driven past a weedy hillside in Morris County and thought “huh, wonder what’s under there,” this talk is basically made for you. Geologist and Sterling Hill Mine tour guide Mike Di Maio traces Mount Hope’s iron mine from its first dig in 1710 all the way through its 1978 closure, covering the colonial tool trade, Revolutionary War cannonball production, and a wartime revival that sent miners back underground. He’ll also back the story up about a billion years, into colliding continents and hot fluids creeping through deep rock. It’s at the Morristown Library Meeting Room on September 22 at 7:00 p.m.
