Kaliane Bradley’s debut mashes up time travel, civil service bureaucracy, and a slow-burn romance in ways that have no business working as well as they do. The premise: a government ministry recruits “expats” pulled from different points in history to test whether time travel is survivable, and one civil servant is assigned to help a 19th-century soldier adjust to the present. It’s funny, sharp, and genuinely hard to put down.

The Morning Book Club meets Friday, June 5 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Lower Level Meeting Room at the Morristown and Morris Township Library.
