Part of the Morris County Historical Society’s sprawling 40-tour walking series, this one traces the Den Brook to a pair of pre-Revolutionary War forges, an 18th-century tavern, a saw mill, and a gristmill. The stories attached to that ground are worth the trip: a enslaved woman named Dinah who tended to patrons, local Native Americans who gathered for the news of the day, and George Washington, who likely cooled his heels there while a blacksmith shod his horse.
